Is there any way I can receive messages only from the Clan-Colquhoun subgroup and not from all the other subgroups?

Hello Bryan,

Clan McPherson museum, also good at genealogy, at Newtonmore (you can contact on the web)

Perhaps Laura Lovett can help as her McBean ancestors of PItchurn were intermarried with McPhersons, from this area.

Laura Lovett lelovett@...

Take an ancestry.com dna test and see what McBeans and Mcphersons and Frasers you match with (Ancestry has the largest data base).

I am hoping somebody can help me locate the family/siblings of Margaret McBean/Bain.

Margaret was born c1811 Alvie. Inverness-shire( I cannot find an entry in Scotland People for her birth). Her parents, according to the immigration records when she and her husband and family entered Australia in 1838 are Duncan MacBean and Bell MacPherson.

Margaret married Alexander Fraser in 1831 at Noid a parish of Kingussie. She is recorded as coming from Dunachton.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Re: MCBEAN

Bryan,
Digging through old notes, I found an unverified reference to my way-back grandfather, Joshia Bean saying His father was (possibly) Robert Bean who died in November, 1790, and was married to a Margarett Bean.
Any chance this Margarett might have remarried and moved to Australia?  ...doesn't sound likely from what you have.
Research for a booklet "The Clan MacBean in North America", by Ribert Bain.
Or, "Scottish Clans & Tartans" by Neil Grant; or "A Brief History of Clan McBain" by Hugh McBain, 21st Chief of Clan McBean worldwide.

Hope this helps.  I'm still looking for more of my MacBean line, too.

Re: MCBEAN

Bryan...
...not sure if this helps you.  My grandmother was Beehi Elizabeth MacBean (the "Mac" dropped by the U.S. line), born in Bean Settlement, West Virginia, in 1882.
Her father (my great-grandfather) was Edward Jackson (Mac) Bean, born in 1876, near Holly, West Virginia.
His father (my grt-grt-grandfather) was Robert (Mac) Bean, born in 1838, near Holly (Braxton County),  West Virginia.
...and, his father was Joshua Bean, born in Hardy County, Virginia (split to be West Virginia & Virginia after the civil war), in 1801.

From my searchings, all had children but none named "Margaret".   That is as far back as I have managed to find.
The U.S. branch of Clan MacBean is headquartered in Denver, Colorado, if you think there might be a connection to or through the U.S.

Samuel  Queen's original name was McQueen from Inverness Scotland.  He was part of the group they called the Maryland Catholics to Kentucky though it was his descendants who went to Scotland.   For more information go to link below

Heather

I have asked for a few lists to be reopened so that I could get the old list of emails and invite them to the old list. However, the Clan lists have, in general, been very quiet, and not really worth the effort. If someone wants to do this work, Anne is willing to work with them, but she does not want to do very many of them.

Don't worry about the records -- the archives will remain right where they are now.

As I've offered repeatedly, if someone wants to start up Clan-Cameron-Genealogy as a subgroup here, I will work with you to make that happen. I can't be the owner of it long-term because I don't have Camerons.

Yes, I think it's great so far.

I think RootsWeb had a Cameron one didn't it? How do you find out where it has gone, or if anyone
is going to move it elsewhere?

Heather

Sad to say, both the Cameron surname list and the Clan-Cameron are dormant. Nothing stops you from setting up your own group here though! If you want a Clan-Cameron subgroup here, I will set it up for you and help you get it started.

According to Wikipedia, "Clan Chattan (Scottish Gaelic: Na Catanaich or Scottish Gaelic: Clann Chatain) is a Highland Clan Confederation. The clan is unique in highland clan history in that it was acknowledged to be a community or confederation, of twelve separate Scottish clans, who each had their own clan chief recognized under Scottish law, but who were united under and bound to a superior chief of the confederation for mutual solidarity, sustenance and protection in the Middle Ages and early modern period in the Scottish Highlands." - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clan_Chattan

During the 14th century, Clan Chattan  "evolved into an alliance or confederation of clans which was made up firstly of the descendants of the original clan (Clan Cattanach, Clan Macpherson, Clan MacBean (or McBain), Clan MacPhail, secondly of the Clan Mackintosh and their cadet branches (Clan Shaw, Clan Farquharson, the Ritchies, and Clan MacThomas) and thirdly of families who were not originally related by blood (Clan MacGillivray, Clan Davidson, the Macleans of Dochgarroch, Clan Macqueen, the MacIntyres of Badenoch and the Clan Macandrews)." - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clan_Chattan

Wikipedia doesn't mention the Camerons.

My ancestors are from Perthshire, Invernesshire and Argyllshire.

Valorie, what were the dates for your gggrandmother Margaret McPhail? We have a number of Margaret McPhails in our family, including my granny Margaret McPhail (1879-1963).

Cheers, Margaret

Hi Margaret,

I must have had temporary blindness concerning the McPhail list. Sorry about that! Yes it exists, and I'm the listowner, and as such, have just created https://groups.io/g/McPhail-Genealogy. Once the new group is approved, I'll be sending out invitations to all list members. Gosh! Thanks for waking me up.

My second-great-grandmother was Margaret McPhail who was born (supposedly) 4 August 1822 in Stamford, Delaware, New York, USA or Genesee, NY and died 14 February 1872 at Juniper Hill Farm, Puslinch, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. I've done only the most desultory research on her and her family so far.

Hi Heather, thanks for asking!

The way a group works on Groups.io (at least one with subgroups) is that each member of the subgroup is also a member of the main group, which in this case is https://scottish-clan-genealogy.groups.io/g/Clans. The people who join the main group may or may not join one or more of the subgroups.

So far, the clans that have chosen to join are Clan-Buchanan, Clan-Chattan, Clan-Colquhoun, Clan-Devine, Clan-MacBean, Clan-MacLean, Clan-MacPherson, Clan-MacQueen, Clan-Maxwell. These were all mail lists at Rootsweb. More clans are welcome; I wrote to the listowners for all the active Clan lists on Rootsweb but got no answer from many of them. Those which have already been deactivated, I could not contact, obviously.

If you are interested in starting a Clan-Cameron or Clan-McPhail, I'll be glad to create them and turn them over to you, or help you get them started, which ever you prefer. I would be very interested in McPhail because my gggrandmother was Margaret McPhail.

As far as I know, there was never a Mc/MacPhail or Clan Mc/MacPhail list at Rootsweb or I would have subscribed to it!
